HOM as a Fetish in Old Mainstream Sources

Some of us grew up in the pre-Internet days, when the occasional sighting of a HOM, in a movie or TV show or magazine or advertisement, was a big thing. A very big thing, and a rare event. I've written before about that infamous AT&T ad in Time magazine, with a sexy chick shutting up a fellow in a double-handed handgag.

Even more rare and shocking was HOM presented, either openly or implicitly, as a fetish. I can think of only one example of this from the pre-Internet era. And that would be the 1978 movie Heaven Can Wait, starring Warren Beatty. I remember seeing this movie in a theater -- I was in high school at the time -- and flipping out and nearly having a heart attack when Dyan Cannon was repeatedly handgagged, with lots of mmmmmphing, and it was plainly portrayed that she liked getting her mouth held. Only disappointment was, it was M/f. I remember wishing so hard that Dyan Cannon had done the "mouthholding" to someone in the movie instead.

Oh yes, Dyan Cannon was hot back in those days, and that movie sparked in me many a fantasy about Dyan Cannon holding her smooth beautiful hand over some fellow's mouth, keeping him in her tight handclamp while he went "Mmmmmmmh mmmmmmmmmm, hhhmmmm mmmmmm MMMMMHHH!!"

They didn't actually use the word "fetish" in the movie, but it was pretty plainly played that way. Not that I would've recognized the word "fetish" if they had used it: growing up in a sheltered small town back in the 60s and 70s, I didn't run across the concept or terminology of a "fetish" until I was 16 and browsing in an old college psychology textbook of my dad's, a year or more after I saw Heaven Can Wait. Till I read that book, I had no idea how to classify or categorize or understand my secret fascination with mouthholding. It was a more innocent era.

But nonetheless I was astonished when I saw this movie, because it was the first time I'd ever run into a portrayal of someone who liked getting their mouth held -- just like me! I remember thinking that someone involved in the production of this movie must be acquainted with the phenomenon of a person liking mouthholding. Which hinted at the possibility, even the likelihood, that I was not the only one in the world with this peculiar liking. Not that any further signs were forthcoming in the culture of those pre-Internet days; but this movie presented me with a tantalizing clue.

Although back then, where could you have followed up such a clue? I mean, this was 1978! Where in all the world could you investigate such questions further back in those days? There was nowhere.

Can anyone think of any other mainstream examples from back before you got online: books, TV shows, movies, whatever? Not just incidents of HOM, which were rare but did turn up every now and then. But rather, incidents of HOM where it was openly stated, or pretty broadly hinted, that it was a fetish?

It's really rare. I honestly can't think of a single case. :P

I haven't seen that movie either. Thanks for the tip though. :)

Yeah, the only other mainstream item I can think of that comes even halfway close is Theodore Sturgeon's 1947 short story Bianca's Hands, which deals with a hand fetish. Once again, the word "fetish" isn't actually used in the story, but it's glaringly obvious.

I take it for granted that there must have been HOM fetishists in the world -- and all other sorts of fetishists, too -- going way, way back. Yet hardly a trace to be found in any mainstream sources... at least, as far as I'm aware.

Does this give you any inspiration for what your next story might be?

Mmmmmmm, I'm vacillating among at least three possibilities for my next story: a piece of historical fiction, a comic-bookish fantasy, and a science fiction story. Oh, plus I can think of a fourth. All of them story ideas I've had for some time, in the first two cases for 25 years or more.

The historical fiction certainly would deal with "HOM fetishists in the world -- and all other sorts of fetishists, too -- going way, way back."

The comic-bookish one sounds very unique! That's certainly a very interesting one.

They all sound like really interesting themes.
