The Gigantic Hands of Jean Maru, Mouth Holder
I've written here before about a woman in our neighborhood I call "Jean Maru." Jean has absolutely gigantic hands. What's more, several times I've seen Jean clamp her hand over a noisy kid's mouth for a second or two.
But when I wrote before, I didn't yet realize what a mouth holder Jean really is.
Jean's hands: Jean is in her late thirties, tall, five foot ten, slender but quite big boned, with big broad shoulders. An odd beauty: short ash blonde hair, wide set eyes, high cheek bones, pouty lips. And Jean has gigantic hands -- big smooth womanly hands, but her hands look several sizes too large, even on a woman of Jean's height and frame. My best eyeball estimate is, Jean's hands are eight and three-quarters inches long from her wrist to the tip of her middle finger, and four and a quarter inches wide across the back of her hand, excluding her thumb. Huge oversized hands!
Jean the mouth holder: Summer of last year I was out at a public event, and Jean was there with her 8 year old daughter. And the girl kept whining, like "When can we go home?" So Jean pressed her hand down over her daughter's mouth for a few seconds, and told her to stop it.
The girl, facing her mother and looking up at her. Jean, with her big large smooth right hand pressed down firmly over the girl's mouth, thumb downward. I'd seen Jean hold a kid's mouth like this before, interesting but nothing new.
The really shocking part came next.
A few minutes later Jean was standing there talking with some people, and her little girl was standing right in front of her, whining again about "When can we go home?" I repeat, the girl was standing right in front of Jean, facing forward, the same direction as her mother. And the hair was tingling on the back of my neck: I was thinking to myself, that's a mighty dangerous position for that girl to be standing in, whining after her mother has already covered her mouth and told her to quit it...
But Jean wouldn't, would she?
Oh yes she would.
The girl stood in front of Jean, whining. And all of a sudden, without even missing a beat in her conversation with the other adults, Jean reached forward and clamped her big smooth strong huge oversized hand tight over her daughter's mouth, to shut the girl up and stop her from whining.
Jean nonchalantly continued her conversation, with her huge right hand clamped hard over her daughter's mouth and lower face. I've shaken hands with Jean before, I know she has a strong, firm, tight squeezing, almost too tight handshake. Now Jean had the girl's lower face completely engulfed in the hard powerful grip of her gigantic strong smooth backed hand, her thumb up alongside the girl's nose.
The girl's eyes looked out above her mother's huge silencing hand, darting back and forth at the people her mother was talking with. They were all chatting, ignoring how Jean now had her daughter physically silenced. The girl was unable to speak, with the palm of Jean's hand squeezed tight over her mouth. And Jean didn't let go. So from behind Jean's unrelenting mouth hold, the girl let out a long muffled noise, somewhat like a cow mooing:
"mmmmmmmmwwwwwwwwwmmmmmmmmmm..."
It was the only sort of noise the girl was capable of making now, with her mother's hand fastened over her mouth. But the people standing around chatting paid no attention to the noise the girl was trying to make. I could see the muscles on the back of Jean's hand flexing as she tightened up her grip over the girl's mouth. The girl stood there another several seconds, mute, with Jean's hand squeezed even harder and tighter over her face. Then once again the girl made an unintelligible muffled moaning noise:
"mmmmmmmwwwwwwwwwwwmmmmmmmmmmm..."
But everyone just ignored the noise. Jean kept on chatting with them, and she kept her large smooth powerful oversized hand fastened hard over her daughter's mouth. The girl just stood there in front of her mother, mouth held shut tight, unable to communicate, unable to talk. The girl could no longer whine or ask when they were going home. The girl could no longer ask anything, she was unable to open her mouth. For another five seconds or more the girl stood there, and then for a third time she cut loose with a meaningless stifled mooing noise:
"mmmmmmmmwwwwwwwwwmmmmmmmmmm..."
But Jean wouldn't stop holding her daughter's mouth, no matter how many times the girl made noises from behind Jean's big tight-clamped hand. So now the girl just stood there in front of her mother, silent, eyes peering out above the huge smooth creamy expanse of the back of her hand. The girl just stood there, silent and mute, the lower half of her face encased in Jean's huge unyielding steel-tight grip. You could see the girl's eyes, her nose: she could breathe through her nostrils. But the rest of her face from her cheekbones on down was imprisoned in a tight living mask of flesh and bone.
Finally after a good ten seconds of silence, and more than twenty seconds of having her mouth held, the girl tried for a fourth time to let out a long muffled lowing noise from behind her mother's firm gripped hand:
"mmmmmmmmmwwwwwwwwwwwwmmmmmmmmmmmm..."
But Jean just kept chatting with people, and Jean just kept her mammoth strong oversized hand clamped down tight over her girl's mouth. She kept on holding her girl's mouth for another five, six, seven seconds, and then finally she let go and took her hand away from her daughter's mouth. By this time Jean had been holding her hand over the girl's mouth for about 30 seconds. Right out in public.
And nobody seemed to pay it any never you mind.
Like I say, this neighbor woman Jean Maru has incredibly large smooth beautiful strong oversized hands, like something you'd hardly believe even on a tall and big boned woman like her. And I've seen her gag a noisy kid with her hand for a few seconds several times before. But never had I dreamed that Jean was the sort who would keep her huge smooth hand clamped tight over her girl's mouth right out in public for 30 seconds, with the girl mmmmmmmphing and all.
Now I know what a mouth holder Jean Maru really is!

Just in case anyone's wondering, yes, the title character in my fictional story Jean the Waitress is loosely based on my real life neighbor Jean Maru...
